2001 V70 jumping into W gear

Post by Sandykb »

Today while driving about 5 miles my 2001 V70 T5 wih 118,000 miles on it kept jumping into W gear -- of course slowing me down. I pushed the W putting it back into Drive but finally it wouldn't go out of W. At home I put into into Manual 2nd which took it out of W. I put it back into D and it stayed for the next 5 miles.

I am a paraplegic and must have this car because it is outfitted with handcontrols and a car topper to stow my wheelchair.

What is the problem? Gear shift? Transmission?

Sounds like an issue with the transmission. Do you happen to have a way to check the codes in the transmission ECU.

When the up arrow illuminated, was it flashing?

If so, it's likely the PNP switch going bad. With the car on, and pushing the brakes, row the shifter back and forth quickly 15 times or so and see if it helps. If it does, the PNP switch will need replacing.

Thanks for the quick replies.

1. ECU codes would have to be checked through my Volvo dealer.

2. I don't have an arrow; I have a W below the gear shift which lights up. Nothing else was on or flashing at any time.

I know very little about cars, so when you say a transmission problem, why would it shift gears when moving?

Thanks in advance.

I moved this to the 2001 and later section; it will stay at the top of the forum there as it is updated, and disappear into the depths of the 850 forum here. Just so you know where to look for it.

Head to Advance Auto or something, and they may be able to read the codes it's throwing. Some generic codes can be read, and then you can come back and look it up.

I would also point fingers at the PNP switch first - it sounds like your car is falling into "limp mode".

When its working normally, come to a dead stop for a few seconds, then quickly let up on the brake pedal and stab the gas. Is there a quick jerk before the car goes into motion? If so, get to the dealer as soon as possible and have the "stop-neutral" function disabled on your car. This is responsible for killing the majority of transmissions in 2001 models.

No flashing arrow on P2 cars just the lit up W
