4-speed has 5 gears?

1998 s70 non-turbo.

From a dead stop my tranny will shift 4 times, indicating 5 gears. Am I crazy or does it have an overdrive?

It's your torque converter going into lockup. It feels like shifting gears, but in actuality it's not. For economy on the interstate.

The lock-up plate in the torque converter is usually applied when in 3rd gear and remains applied in 4th too. It locks up the converter to give better better fuel economy as it lowers the engine revs slightly.

It provides better fuel economy not by lower engine RPM's but by linking the trans and the engine directly and eliminating any slippage that wastes energy.
