Sunroof 1988 Volvo 760

Post by lummert »

The sunroof on my 88 760 will not close like it should. If I open it in the regular position, it butts up against the wind deflector when closing, preventing it from closing all of the way. I thought the wind deflector was bent so I replaced the wind deflector. If I push down on the wind deflector with a screwdriver handle the sunroof will close. What is causing this. It also looks like the sunroof is lower in the front than in the back when closed. Is this the problem?

I have the same problem with mine, and the only way I've found to get it to close is to do the same thing with the wind deflector... Unfortunately I'm not sure of the way to fix this, but if the roof is off balance like you said, that sounds like it could be a potential issue.

The 740/760 sunroofs are noted for going out of alignment or sticking completely. Usually it is down to lack of lubrication and cleaning of the mechanism. The racks at the rear of the roof that raise and lower the panel are made of a soft metal and often break and jam everything up.

To do any checks or repairs you need to get rid of the liner. Open the roof to the vent position. Use a screw driver or needle nose pliers to release the springs that hold the sunroof liner to the roof. Push the liner back into the space where the roof would normally retract. Don't push it too far as it loves to get jammed. This will expose all parts, and adjustment screws.

If the racks appear to be unbroken you may only need to adjust the sunroof. There are two adjustment screws on each side.

The panel just sits on the tracks in the front, and is actually a loose fit. You will usually find that the worm mechanism that drives the roof back on either side will be choked with old grease. You can soften this with a good squirt or three of WD40 and you can then remove a lot of it. Now lubricate it with a spray lithium grease after carefully covering the head lining and other bits that don't like grease.

If you find any parts that are broken on one side only they should be replaced in pairs, as whatever caused the roof to fail may have affected both sides.

The front of the roof actually goes into its closed position by riding up on the collapsed wind deflector. The rear pops into place by the action of the racks and its position is adjusted by the screws.

Thanks for the reply Bill. I am waiting for a cooler day to check out this sunroof. I have noticed that the sunroof closed with the front in a higher position before I replaced the wind deflector. I already have the PDF copy of the Greenbook on body fittings. I think it was something that you had previously posted. It has instructions for repairing the sunroof but they are not all that clear.

Quite often the problem can be resolved by adjustment. For some reason the screws can work loose.

Hey, you too? I finally tried to hold the deflector down last night with my finger. Should've worked, but didn't quite release the button in time and jammed my finger. I've printed off billofdurham's advice and will try that. I'm kind of attached to my fingers
