Hi. I have a 850 GLE, 1994 (220.000 km) and it uses pretty much oil I think. It's not dripping or leaking any oil.l It seems to be used in the engine. For every 5.000 km I have to refill app. 5 lites of oil. I use semi syntetic 10w40 oil.
Does anyone have the same problem and what could be the reason. It's very anoying (and expensive). I have an 20 yr old 240 GL and it's not using any oil at all.

Do you get blue smoke on start up? After going down a hill with your foot off the gas do you get blue smoke when you put your foot back on the gas? If you wipe your tailpipe with a paper towel are there deposits that reapear soon afterwards? Check your airfilter to see if you have oil entering from the oil seperator

I bought a used Volvo 850 about 8 months ago...it also appears to use about a quart every 1000 miles. I've been using Mobil 1 synthetic. My mechanic says to try a standard 10-40 and see if there is any difference. He also says that the new oil being marketed for older cars may help because it has a sealer included in the blend.
I had this problem in my previous car, Acura Legend, however it is common to happen in honda/acura's. So if it's not anything that's a huge problem, the fix is generally not worth the money for the car. I would suggest just putting up with it until either the engine goes bad or it becomees to expensive to continue doing.
