mystery no start

Post by gems23rd »

Hi y'all,
2000 V40 wagon. Turned key & nothing. No clicks, no sound... Lights, etc all working. Had it jumped & was not battery. Did the "usual": keys out & in again, shift up & down...Called for tow & driver tried to start. Again nothing. Maybe 30 tries over an hour. It gets to the shop and...that right, it never failed to start in 2 dz. tries. No codes either. Picked up wagon and no problem in a week. Repair shop ( Voltech in Austin Tx- Volvo only) says maybe <forget name of mechanism>the cylinder into which key is inserted. This would be pain as think it needs to come from factory & is $300 and without code showing may not be what ails it. This is worrysome as I'm an artisan and set up at fairs, festivals. I'd hate to be stuck somewhere at midnight...Anyone heard of this happening and have idea of what it could be?
Thanks, Kat

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
<forget name of mechanism>
Could this be the ignition switch? The ignition switch has two parts. The outer part is the lock cylinder which wouldn't prevent the car starting if it were faulty. The inner part is the electrical section which has been a problem on earlier cars as it does wear and intermittently fails to make the necessary electrical connection. No connection there means the car won't start.

Check out our sponsor MyVolvoPartsOnline.com, link at the top of the forum. They list the electrical part of the switch at $40.67. They are very helpful and knowledgeable about Volvos. Some electric/electronic parts on your car require a software download to make them work but I can't find any mention of such a download for this part. They will be able to tell you if it is necessary.

If you do call them mention this forum.
