How do I drain the fuel from my 2004 S-80?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

How do I drain the fuel from my 2004 S-80?

Post by dmp »

My wife accidentally put some diesel fuel in our S-80. It is now about 50/50 and I want to drain the tank, put in fresh fuel along with fuel system cleaner. I cannot siphon it out and then learned it shouldn't be siphoned anyhow. Is there a sump drain on the tank? I found a little white hose coiled up under a plug that is near the front of the tank. Is this the drain? I ran out of time last night and want to try again tonight. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you very much.

The only way to drain the tank safely is with a siphon machine which will collect the fuel in its own tank. On the S80 you need to pull as much as possible through the filler then you have to take out the rear seat to gain access to the two sides of the tank, remove one or two parts and finish sucking it out.

You say the ratio is about 50/50 but how much fuel is in the tank? If it is a fairly small amount you could fill up with high grade petrol and drive it as normal. You will see smoke from the exhaust from time to time until all of the diesel is used up. If you go down this route fill up more often to dilute the diesel more quickly.

Thank you very much for the advice. It has about half a tank left and I thought about just filling it up with high octane and some fuel system cleaner. Does anybody know if that will have any consequences?
