Blue Grey smoke out of Exhaust

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Blue Grey smoke out of Exhaust

Post by Iotamanju »

I have a 2001 S80T. About a week ago I notice it was smoking a little while at church. I was thinking that my oil was old and needed to be changed. So I changed that oil and changed the spark plugs. While taking off the turbo tubes I noticed oil inside the tube towards the back of the engine. Put it back together took it for a test drive and everthing was fine. The next morning I noticed that while I was sitting idle smoke was pouring out if I increased the RPM it was not as bad. The smoke is noticable at idle and take off while sitting for 20 or more seconds. No noticeable smoke when I drive street or highway speeds. The Vehicle has been leaking and burning oil. Can someone shed some light as to what I can try before I have to replace maybe the or both turbos? Can you tell mewhat area of the engine the turbo is at?

Also does anyone make shop manuels for this vechicle?

Thanks in Advance

It could be a bad turbo oil seal, bad piston rings, or bad valve stem seals. The turbos are on the back of the engine (firewall side). You can get DVD manuals on eBay. Search for Volvo VADIS. The UK sellers seem to have the best prices.

Thanks Vegasjetskier,
When I changed the spark plugs there was no oil residue on them. Does replacing the trubo oil seal equal rebuilding the turbo. I must add that since I replaced the plugs it's running smooth and full power. I dont know if that helps. I never hear the Turbo anyway but it still seemed to be working before I put it in my garage.

Ugh!!!! I have the same issue with my 2003 v70 2.5L turbo. I am suprised, your disciption is identical to mine. i just hit 140K and I've come to either it being bad turbo seals or the PVC system. Please let me know what fixed yours....either way its pricy, but I don't want to do both if I don't have too. I was hoping there would be a Volvo Tech that may have come across this problem and give us some insight. I did test my PVC system (rubber glove method) and at idle I DO NOT have a neg pressure at idle but i do at higher rpm. That leads me to the PVC system. BUT know has ever posted that a bad PVC system burns oil only after about 20-30 sec at idle....and vise vera about turbo seals only leaking at idle...like i said ..ugh.. its frustrating....and it stinks..lol good luck
