2001 V70 2.4T front wheels are shaking...

Post by E170_Driver »

Hey Folks,

just wanted to get an overall opinion of the situation at hand. My front wheels have been starting to shake more violently over the past six months to a point where it is starting to get me concerned about it doing some permanent damage. I have to this day changed the driver's side drive shaft, because the original shaft was leaking grease; in addition I have changed both tie roads (first looked promising, but soon turned back to the ole' shake) and have balanced both tires within the past 2 months. Well, I plan on getting both tires one more time balanced tomorrow and have the guys look at the wheels making sure they are in good conditions. If the balanced wheels do not resolve the problem then I am going to order over the weekend the passenger side drive shaft and replace the brake rotors including pads. I hope that this will finally resolve my problem.
What else should I look for and what does everybody think about the planned steps in getting this shaking of the wheels figured out??

Thanks

Did you review your strut support???...take a look on the steering fluid reservoir..sometimes the shake came from the lack of atf...check the steering ends for loose or noise...also the arms rubbers..

I appreciate the reply and will definitely check out the strut supports...I also mad the mistake (I think) in tightening the wheels a little too much. I do not have a torque wrench, but is it possible to tighten the nuts by hand too much??

it depends on the length of your wrench. it is possible to over tourque, but even tourquing is more critical. many tire warehouse will tourque them for free. i did the drive shaft replacements, and found they are easily figured out. if your shake occurs at start up or upon acceleration, they are loose.they would only vibrate at speed freewheeling if they are really shot. check tire wear ie cupping to confirm the health of your ball joints and alignment.
