740 Front Rotors

Post by arbop »

Attempting to replace the front rotors on my 740 GL, non-ABS. Have tried two different sets of rotors, from two different vendors, (Auto Zone and Advanced Auto), with the same problem. The part of the rotor that fits over the front hub seems to be too small, maybe .010 to .015 of an inch. To clarify, nothing to do with the lug spacing, but specifically the rotor over the wheel hub. The front hub itself seems to be an original item, and the rotors I took off came off quite easily. Might my problem be caused by where I am buying my parts? Anyone have a suggestion as to the cause of my problem, and where to get some rotors that will fit? Thank you

What are the brands and part numbers of the rotors. They may have given you the wrong rotors. I find that the people who work at these two stores are about as helpful as a cat or dog at finding the parts that you need. Actully, the girls who work in my local Advance Auto and Autozone are more helpful than the guys. Matbe this is because the guys always try to tell you what you need instead of asking you what you need. If you can look the parts up on their sites yourself then you can check the part numbers. Your 91 740 non-ABS should have Girling dual piston calipers and 287mm (11.3 inch) rotors.

I took the time to look up the part numbers for you.

Advance Auto Parts:
Wearever brand: YH141651

Autozone:
Duralast brand: 3488

These are the only rotors listed for your 1991 740 w/o ABS.

Have returned both sets, no doubt Chinese-made. probably by child labor. You are correct as to the Girling rotors, but I believe it calls out a diameter of ~10.25 inches, and that is from my memory, so no promises.

It must be too hot in here. The numbers that I gave you are for a 91 740 w/o ABS, not an 89 740 GL w/o ABS. The correct numbers are:

Advance Auto Parts: YH141421

Autozone: 3487

The numbers that I gave you would work with ABS.

The diameter is listed as 11.25 inches for 89 740 GL with or without ABS, they just use different rotors.

Just checked the Advance Auto receipt, the part # is/was YH141531

Any idea what that is supposed to fit?

If I go there and ask for the YH141421, pretty confident it will fit?

Thanks for all the help, really appreciated!

I tried to find what that Advance YH141531 number fit. I found cross reference to a 1989 Volvo 740 with 14 inch wheels. As far as the YH141421 fitting, I now am not sure. When I looked up these rotors on NAPA site they list 262mm, 280mm and 287mm rotors for the front. The 280mm is for models starting with 1991 with ABS and single piston calipers. The 287mm is for 740/760 models with ABS with dual piston calipers, and 1991 740 w/o ABS with dual piston calipers.

edit: I went back to Advance Auto Parts website and looked up an 89 Volvo 740 GL. The front rotors are listed as YH141531 (10.25in. diameter for no/ ABS) and YH141421 (11.25in. diameter w/ ABS)

Autozone lists for 89 740GL: 3487 (262.5mm for no/ABS) and 3488 (287mm w/ ABS).

Amazing, now I am totally confused! 1989, GL, 15 inch steel wheels, no ABS, single piston caliper. Care to venture a guess? Starting to look as if it may be order the part # you provided, and use calipers before I try to install them. I do know that the YH141531 does not fit.

If you have a NAPA in your area they have prices that are just as good as the two stores you mentioned. Here is how they compare for the 262.5mm rotors:

Advance Auto Parts: $32.99
Autozone: $32.99

NAPA has several brands available:
NAPA Premium: $27.37
NAPA Ultra Premium: $45.08
Brembo: $65.59
Ultra-8 by Altrom $33.09

They also sell Zimmerman rotors.

I have used several parts on my 88 765 from the Altrom parts line at NAPA. They have always been the same parts suppliers as the OE manufacturer.

Are you sure about your car having ABS? As far as I know, the single piston caliper is for ABS cars only. The non ABS cars I have worked with all had 2 piston calipers because of the dual diagonal braking system.
