Need tips on selling my '01 v70 t5

Post by FUBAR »

I'd like to get the most money for selling my baby, and I would greatly appreciate any tips you guys may have in regards to where to list it, how much to ask for, how to prepare the car for showing, what to comment about, etc!
Let me start by introducing the car:

White/tan leather '01 V70 T5 auto/tiptronic, 95k miles. Purchased as 2nd owner at 41k back in 2006.

The Bad:
The notorious geartragic has a bad reputation.
18" pegs, straight, but with LOTS of curb rash (debating whether to refinish them myself)
Passenger side rear seat is difficult to unlock from upright position.
A few minor dings here and there.
Coming up on 100k service: Timing belt, coolant flush, brake bleed, another trans flush, etc.

The Good:
It runs great, pulls hard!
Interior smells good(non-smoker)
Trans flushed at 42k, and again at 75k
New interstate battery at 75k
PCV system cleaned at 80k at volvo dealer
AC Compressor replaced at 60k
ABS module rebuilt at 50k
New front brake rotors and pads at 80k
New ball joints on both sides at 95k
New Tie rods (inner and outer) replaced on both sides at 95k
New Bridgeston Potenza re760 Sport on the front with ~200mi, same tires on rear with ~2k on them.
New spark plugs bosch platinum plus at 90k
Factory roof rails and thule cross bars
Factory rear cargo mat
4 x 16" Volvo wheels with studless snow tires 50% tread left
Volvo Doggy barrier

aftermarket stuff:
Bilstein HD front and rear
Tinted windows
kn air filter
powerflex front lower ctr arm bushes
new passenger side front control arm -rear bushing
ipd lower trans mount
ipd strut bar
ipd end links
ipd cbv
ipd tcv
subwoofer wiring to the back
blaupunkt door speakers
usa-spec ipod adapter
dynamat on all doors, trunk

How much should I ask? My reason for selling is that I'm interested in getting a low miles(~50k) 4runner
Thanks in advance!

#1 rule of selling a car is make it look good. For photos, a wash is ok. Unless you're a pro photographer, spending 1 hour or 10 hours making the car look good isn't going to matter.

But when people come to look at it in person, wash/wax/detail inside and out is paramount.

Glossy, beautiful clean paint can sell a 1979 Plymouth Volare (I had one).

Tough one.
I could probably sell it for 8500 or so, but you as a private party without a following may get 7K+ with everything fixed.
I always sell a no excuse car with EVERYTHING fixed

FWIW, I bought a 2001 V70 2.4T with 77.7K miles on one year ago (07-24-09) for $7400 from a wholesale dealer. I haven't seen one for less since. I did have to replace the struts and shocks, which was a bummer ($1400), so you could say I got it for $8800. I was gonna buy a nicer looking white one for $9500 but it was gone before I got back with the wife to look at it.

If I knew 100% certain that the transmission wasn't a ticking time bomb, and that the suspension wasn't so fragile, I'd happily keep it! But this transmission is not shifting smooth(it never has!), I wonder how much life it's got left. I'm also driving the car every summer on long and rough forestry roads where I'm certain the suspension components have worn out. I've been to the alignment shop at least twice a year! Now that the entire front suspension has been replaced the issues are gone, but I fear only temporarily if I continue going out to the woods. I heard from a friend that he used to get around 18-20mpg in his '01 4runner -not bad.

So after receiving a few offers, I've decided to not sell my baby. I've come to the conclusion that it won't depreciate much more, and since I've put way too much blood/sweat/tears into it to just let someone else have it(I'll admit that I've become attached  ). If the tranny does in fact go sometime in the future, then I think I will just man-swap in my garage. The car's been good to me so I'll cross my fingers  After all, I I've fixed pretty much every other possible problem the car can develop. But speaking of that, my personal copy of vadis is not very much help on accomplishing a trans swap!
I found a great write-up from someone who did a man-swap on their c70, but I'm not sure how it applies to my p2. I know "chilledman" has some experience on the topic but I can't for the life of me find any write ups on p2 swaps. I'd like to start compiling all of the parts and be prepared so that when(if) the auto dies I can get started working on it right away. Where do I start :?:

I have the same car with exactly the same issues. The trans has never shifted from 3 to 4 smoothly. To prolong the trans life, I use the manual mode to shift up through the gears(I bump it rapidly to the gear before the rough transition). Whichever transition shifts rough ie: 1-2, 2-3 etc. I accelerate past the 2k rpm range it would have shifted to between 3k and 4k or more then let off the gas for a second or two Before shifting into the trouble area. It makes a smooth shift and no clunk... So far, this has bought me six months more of use and hopefully more! This is by no means is this a fix but mine has not got worse and I'm in Phx in 110 degree heat..

Yeah, I've adapted how I drive too. The rough shifting for me is mostly just from a stop. Dealer says the transmission and throttle have the newest software so I don't know why the stop-neutral thing happens intermittently.

I found chilledman's posts up on volvo-xc forum regarding the swap, but I'm still a bit in the dark about what parts are required for a manual swap. He kinda just posted pictures, no lists of parts needed. I figure new axle assemblies for manual trans cars, transmission mounts, shifter linkage goodies, aside from an m56.
