Adjusting the ebrake on my XC90 - How to?

Post by green27614 »

Can someone for the love of GOD please post the correct procedure for adjusting the ebrake on an AMERICAN XC90.
I have seen all sorts of posts for this and they are cryptic at best (including the stinkin diagram from VADIS).
Here is what I know-
remove the lower panel to access the cable asembly.
remove the clip
now what??

I have seen the diagram from VADIS that says to press out the cable adjustment but there is nothing to press out!! there is only what appears to be a barrell connector which I have twisted both ways and get ZERO results. Best I can guess is to turn it clockwise so the threaded rod gets shorter. I am not an idiot and am highly mechanically inclined but this thing eludes me and I am getting frustrated!!
I recently replaced the ebrake shoes and need to adjust this stinkin thing so I can park on the hill in my driveway without having to put stress on my tranny. the thing worked before I replaced the ebrake shoes so logic would dictate that this should be an easy fix. Right??

someone please help!!

Thanks!

I'm in the same situation. I can't get this thing to tighten up no matter what I do.

Hi - I have a 2004 XC90 2.5T and I just successfully adjusted the ebrake cable this morning following the posted Volvo instructions: "XC90_Parking_Brake_Adj.pdf". I would like to point out that I believe that the instruction step: "Screw the socket clockwise so that the groove for the clip emerges. Install the clip.", is incorrect and should be corrected to: "Screw the socket counter-clockwise....." Just follow the big black arrows in the diagrams as looking from the drivers seat (Left Hand Drive). The diagrams are correct!

Additionally, I did not have the proper adjustment rod tool 951 2947, so I used a flare nut wrench that just fit over the thin adjusting rod, where the adjustment rod tool is shown in the Volvo diagram. I followed the Volvo instructions: "Depress the brake pedal to the first notch." Then with two hands, I pulled the on the flare nut wrench toward the engine end of the vehicle, thus pulling the adjusting rod (and cable) through the socket until I had the proper cable tension. This was determined by making sure that with the ebrake ON, the vehicle would hold in Drive and Reverse, while not dragging the ebrake shoes when the ebrake is OFF.

I hope this helps someone else out, as the instructions are somewhat confusing. Thanks!
