85 DL B230F won't start in cool weather

Post by jwerkowski »

Hello --

My 85 DL (B230F engine, automatic, 117K) won't start when the temperature is +/- 50 deg F. E.g., in the early morning when I'm trying to get to work. It cranks, but won't start. Once the sun hits it and warms it up, it starts with no problem.

The car runs well otherwise.

I have "rolled" the fuses, but that hasn't helped.

I would appreciate any ideas about what may be wrong and/or how to diagnose the problem.

Thanks in advance.

I drove the B230F engine for 13 years! You can't kill them!

I had the same problem with my Volvo 440 (in Germany). Drove home, car would not start in the morning.

The TDC sensor (Top-dead-center) sets the fireing order on startup. Without this input the computer does not start the motor.

I found that it was a bad contact. Pull all the sensor connectors on and off a few times. /Most problems are contact related on older cars.

Thanks Karl. Where is the TDC?
