Buzzing/chugging from serpentine belt

Post by v70snowbum »

MVS,

What kind of lubricants can I use to silence the wheels that turn my serpentine belt?

My serpentine belt and the wheels that drive it have been under some abuse the last months due to fluids leaking onto it. (coolant, water, powersteering fluid) My mechanic checked out my belt and said the belt doesn't need replacing.

Thanks,

Jim

If you have had fluids leaking on them you might want to try belt dressing. The bearings are all sealed so the only cure there, if it is a bearing, is replacement of the noisy bearing or the entire part that has the noisy bearing.

Make sure the noise if from something in the serpentine belt chain and not the timing belt chain. If something fails in the serpentine belt chain the instrument cluster will light up like a Christmas tree but the car will continue to run just fine until the battery gets low enough. If something fails in the timing belt chain it is pretty much Game Over for the engine and it happens instantly.

I'm almost 100% sure it is the serpentine belt. The buzzing accelerates when i press the gas.

So when I'm at idle it is like "buzz...buzz...buzz..."
When I have the engine at about 2000 RPMs it is faster - "Buzz.buzz.buzz.buzz."
