Bevel gear removal, need pointers

Post by Matty Moo »

I'm doing an engine swap on a 98 v70r. I understand that I need to remove the bevel gear to get the engine out.

Here's what I'm running into. You can't get to the top bolts on the bevel gear, so the turbo has to come out first?

IF anybody could point me to a tutorial, that would be great too. I've searched but can't find anything solid on actually removing it.

I attached the procedure. You will need to use whatever hand tools necessary to remove. try wobble extensions and universal joints to help with ratcheting.

I have not done this on a 98 V70R yet so I am hoping others who have chime in

What tools have you tried to get to the bolts? Have you tried hand tools, extensions etc?

You know what, after going back out there and staring at it some more, I think I can get to them without taking the turbo off. The combination of the bevel gear and the turbo being in one spot really adds a twist to it.

Go from the pass side to the drivers side under the turbo using 2 long extensions and a u-joint. I think it's going to work.

Those blasted Volvo instructions are always so incredibly vague to the point where I think they wrote them as some sort of joke.

Just got a call back from Volvo. Stick with the plan. It involves extensions, u joints and some prayer. You do not need to pull the turbo. Just start pulling things from the tool box and you will get it out.

Sounds like you are on the right track. Make sure to use a 6 sided socket.

I got it figured out. It was just a matter of attacking it from the top and going across under the turbo. 2 extensions and a u-joint did it. It's still tricky maneuvering it onto the bolt, but it's doable.

Thanks, Matt

The collar isn't bad at all. I don't even see any real wear. I could have cleaned it better for pics, but the splines look to be in stellar shape.

Realistically, the bevel gear is cake compared to pulling the entire engine out.

Hey, good to see you got it apart. That collar I've been told by a couple of Volvo specialists can strip out due to rust build up which = big money. They told me to fire some grease in it after it's all cleaned up and don't be stingy on the amount of grease. Obviously this lengthens the collar spline life and leaves money in the bank for beer and a night on the town with yer wife! I'm pulling my bevel drive out to replace the seals and lube that collar soon which I was told is a very good idea at the 125000 mile mark for all Volvos with this same set-up. Does it look like it would be worth while to seal up the surface between the tranny housing and the bevel drive housing to prevent further moisture damage? Or is there an open area that would be hard to seal designed for water drainage? A little "Right Stuff" silicone can go a long way with preventing expensive repairs! Good luck with the engine swap. It doesn't look like it would be nearly as rough to do as a newer Nissan Altima! (Nissans are no fun to pull engine out of)
