Problem after odometer gear repair

Post by kk5zc »

I changed out my odometer gear and I thought everything went great. However, it has been several days since the repair and this morning was the first time that I had driven it in the dark. The LCD information center works, but it does not light up when the lights are on. Before I tear out the cluster again, can someone tell me what I need to look for. I don't recall any light connector for the LCD info center.

Thanks,
Bobby

Look for the bulbs to be properly seated. One of the two in my 850 loses contact from time to time and a smack on the cluster panel in front of it reminds it to light up.
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Also -> Amazon link
. Click that when you go to buy something on Amazon and MVS gets a cut!

The elements in the bulbs seem to get fragile with age. The jostling they get when the cluster is removed can cause them to fail. On advice from a VS thread, I replaced mine when I did my 850 gear.

However....Look at it this way. You saved about $400 over the cost of a dealer repair.

Regarding the replacement gear for the odometer -- where did you locate the new gear?

I am in the same bind and would like to save myself the $$ and fix it myself.

Thanks,

Marc

Here is one website you may want to look into. There maybe others but this is the only one I have seen so far mentioned in Volvo forums I've joined.

http://www.odometergears.com/

Dosbrick - where did you get the lightbulbs? Are they available at your local auto parts shop or did you get them via the web.

I bought them from the dealer. There are 4 larger bulbs for the instruments and 2 smaller ones for the LCD clock/temp. They cost $12 for all.

IPD has a kit but it includes a DVD how-to for cluster removal and costs $29.95. Volvospeed.com has the how-to for free.

I have a new gear for the odometer, but I am unsure where it sits. Does it just sit inside the larger gear loose? Help?

Hey, thanks for the information! I bought a gear from the site you mentioned and fixed it myself in about 1.5 hours (while watching t.v. mind you) no issues.

Thanks!!
