Bought the new kevlar timing belt for the wifes 1990 base model V70 I'm building for her.We did a diffrent install than bringing everything to top dead center.
We marked the cams at 12 o'clock.Put three marks on the belt at the twelve o'clock position, and a marked two groves in each direction.Pulled the harmonic balancer.Marked the crank pulley the same.
Pulled the belt, transfered the marks to the new belt.Installed the new idler, tensioner, waterpump, then the belt, matching up the marks.
A hour and a half we were done. This was after jacking up the car,and pulling the tire.
The kevlar belt is very quiet, and hope we get a little longer life out of it.

How will you know you get longer life, unless you run it until it dies, and then it's too late. It may also be outside the 2-3 standard deviations from average life, so you also wouldn't know anyway.
Anyway, good luck with the new timing belt, and keep an eye on the water pump.

I Did the water pump. From what I read about the belts,is the big thing thay dont streatch as much, and are more durable. The main reason for going with the new belt is this is the car the wife will be on the road with, not that I'm trying to run it over the required run times recommended by the MFG.

The belt will probably long outlive the tensioner. Don't, however, test the life of the tensioner. It won't last much past its recommended change interval.

I don't think the kevlar belt is designed to be an extended change interval part. Just a stronger belt for higher performance engines and still replaced at 70k.jablackburn wrote:The belt will probably long outlive the tensioner. Don't, however, test the life of the tensioner. Do you have any idea on change interval for these tensioners and idlers? I've just had the timing and accessories drive belts replaced yesterday without changing them. Thanks.

Early 98's and pre-98 cars can be changed every other belt change - mid-late production 98's and 99's and later must be changed EVERY belt change (since the interval is longer anyway).
