coolant drip mystery

Post by pgregston »

I have a leak in the coolant that shows on the floor pan below the left foot well. Can't see any wet anywhere on the firewall, or in the connections to the heater core there. Rate is enough to bring on the coolant level light in about twenty minutes. Who knows what would source this (I suspect the heater core). ?
Thanks

I just went thru this, your heater core is leaking and the repair is not fun.
Dash removal is required. It is a real pain. Maybe you can live without heat, if so just disconnect the heater hose to the core at the fire wall and loop it back to the engine.

Thanks Dan. Its a mild climate here, so heater loss not a big deal. Any special parameters on the fitting? Can it be any kind of metal or plastic?

No fittings needed, remove on hose from the heater core, then remove one from the valve and place it on the one you just removed from the heater core, the free end left from the core goes on the valve, so the there is a loop on the heater core and a loop on the valve.

So this turned out to be a tiny leak at the hose to the heater spraying out to a blind spot that collected right below the footwell. New hose and clamp and now there isn't any leak. But the coolant level light keeps coming on, even when the tank is at the minimum line. Any clues on how this occurs and what can resolve it?
