94 850 Turbo Wagon Overheating -- no nearby mechanic

Post by AMFL »

:?: This is a great site. I bought my first Volvo used in Nov. for $7600. It now has 92K miles. I love it. However, with the warmer weather, it's been overheating, esp. on hills, even when the AC if off. It literally boils in the reservoir tank. I am a park ranger who lives in a remote area. The only local mechanic I trust won't touch it. The nearest dealer is 250 miles away so I am afraid to drive it that far. I have ordered a thermostat, but bought the higher temp one which sounds like a mistake now that I've read your postings. Someone said I should just plan to replace the radiator because it's probably that. I have no idea. My question is, is replacing either the thermo. or radiator something that someone with basic mechanical skills (and a Haynes manual) can do? Is it more likely to be one cause than the other?

The car also leaks oil, but the source has not been dianosed. I just keep it full. Other than my worries about the temp. problems and difficulty of finding someone to work on it, this is the coolest (no pun intendend) car I've ever had! I appreciate any advice you can provide.

As opposed to getting a new radiator, try flushing it & running water & vinega through it to get out all the crud first.

I'm replacing my radiator along with the charge air/inter cooler on saturday, I can tell you what exactly is involved w/ pictures then.

T-stat is easy. Get the right torx bit. Here's how to do it:

The hot one I've heard makes the engine happier. But it's not recommended for older models 5+ years because all the parts need to be a bit stronger because of the higher pressure.
