I am having trouble determing the correct position for the crankshaft. I have read many of the previous posts relating to this subject. Some say look for a notch in the crank gear valley, other say look for notches on two crank gear hills. I don't see any notches on my crank gear.
I am in the process of replacing a head gasket on a 95 850 NA. Before I removed the TB I set the camshaft pulleys in the correct position. When I pulled the head #1 was at the top of the cylinder so I think that I have the crank in the right position. I painted a reference mark on the crankpulley and the subframe.
My problem is when I set the crank on my marks the #1 piston is one tooth away from being at the absolute TDC.
Is the true crank mark one tooth before TDC or is it exactely at the top which would be one tooth past my marks?
Thanks.
Crankshaft position

The crank is a real bugger to see. The marks are nearly microscopic and there is a bunch of stuff in the way, blocking your vision from the top. There are actually three versions I have seen, The notch in the center of the valley, the two notches on opposing ridges, and a groove on the crank pulley down the center of the valley. You should see one of the above.

ya...good question...my 850 turbo micro crank mark is one tooth away from TDC also?
maybe these 3 marks are just alighment marks and the micro notch crank mark is NOT a TDC refrence mark...?
HELP ANYBODY ????? what mark is TDC ?
