1996 850 Torbo Wagon- Oil in Turbo

Newbie here:
Looking for help in determining what the cause of my problem is.

Slow oild leak but not enough to justify the 1/2 quart per day I must put in. Found oil on my back window and hatch appears from the exhaust.
No engine knocks and appears to run okay as long as I keep putting the oil in. Turbo works okay too.

I was told maybe oil is getting in the turbo and that the leak could be right there too, in some hoses and/or "O" rings that are turbo related.

Is this possible that I dont need an engine rebuild and that it could at least be what I was told?

Will I have to get a new turbo unit? If so what is the best and most cost effective upgrade of performance over stock turbo unit (if I have to replace it anyway).

I dont just want to bring it in to the Volvo dealer, our economy is so bad here in NYC they may make a decision by the seat of there pants.

Any oil under the car? Or is it all in exhaust?

Yes there is some oil under the car but not a half quart a day. It is annoying and it appears to come from behind the engine (looking from the front and could be sourced under a metal hood of some sort.

Yeh I would say if I visit for a few hours I get maybe 2 small spots.

I get that too, a smell after the car has warmed up, definately from leaking oil, could it be the same hoses. I am not sure how to get to the hoses though.

I dont think that would cause the black oil soot on the back window though.

You should take it in to get a pro's estimation of what the problem is -- it sounds significant and not easily diagnosed over the Internet.

Just tell them beforehand that you don't have the money to get a big repair done.

oil leaking from the turbo return line onto the backside of the engine is common, I have the problem also. You can buy a kit from www.ipdusa.com that has an instruction manual along with the O-ring and gasket required to fix the leak.

I am not familiar with the plumbings inside the turbo that could cause a leak. I know that Adrenaline Racing sells a 19T turbo upgrate kit for ~900 dollars that they run 22psi on. A very well worth it kit

If you car isn't running well then maybe you just have excessive blow by and are burning the oil from your crank case in the cylinders but not all of it is being burned. It is also possible that oil is leaking into the turbine housing of the turbo and is throwing oil into your exaust. If you are comfortable doing so removing the downpipe or having someone doing so for you and looking inside the turbine housing will probably tell you if that is indeed the problem.

Thank you for adding to my post.
I took it to a dealer and they repaired the hose and ring.

After several days of long drives the black soot on the back window no longer builds up and the engine nd turbo work fine.

This is great for only $120, they had the car all day to locate the leak because the engine was extrememly dirty from the oil leak.

I have to get it steam cleaned now.

I did my oil return line when I found drips, but wasn't experiencing anything like the 1/2 quart/day loss you were, or I would have suggested looking there first.

The parts are literally less than $4 at the dealer. The pipe's a bit of a beyatch to get off/on, but other than that it's an easy repair.

Easy -- for those that like to do research online, get under their cars, get oil all over them, buy tools, buy wheel ramps etc. like me
