99 S80 T6 cylinder head replacement

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

99 S80 T6 cylinder head replacement

Post by Rustypig »

Serpentine belt broke, wrapped up around crank and timing slipped...threw on a new timing belt but as I suspected it wouldn't start, so here's a few questions.

-Best/cheapest place to get a rebuilt 99 S80 head?

-Where to get procedure for teardown/rebuild...Chiltons and Haynes do not cover it.

-Where to get the "special" tools and are they really required.

-CVVT: anything special to watch out for?

I'm pretty mechanically inclined (used to be a aircraft mechanic), but the thought of getting this engine put back together right scares the **** out of me.

Suggest you get a copy of VADIS. It covers all the procedures. Also search the forum re: special tools. I know some people make their own equivalents, etc.
VADIS is on a CD which you can buy off ebay or ???

Thanks for the advice. A copy of Vadis is on the way now.

Next question for those who have been through the bent valve fun and games...
Does it generally take out most of the valves (so plan on getting a rebuilt head), or is it worth the time to pull the head and go after individual/damaged valves? I noticed they are pretty proud of the valves ($30 or so each).

Hello,

I went through this in March. I ended up taking the engine all apart and found all 12 intake valves bent, and exhaust valves made contact but I think they were ok still. The head bolts might break when you try to take them out, so have an impact on them for a long long time before you try actually applying torque with a extension rod.. My uncle ended up messing up the broken head bolt trying to take it out. I also found one of the turbo's had shaft play...

Soooo after all that what I did was I found a used engine with less km and both turbo's for $1000. The turbo's were like new and I got all the sensors spare now. Take a look at the cost of new head gasket, bolts, seals etc.. I'm sure you can find an engine for cheaper. I took the engine out from the top without removing subframe. Honestly its not that hard (compared to some cars its very hard), but it can be done at home in your garage.

If you have any questions pm me, its still pretty fresh in my head. Also make sure to replace all timing hardware, water pump, thermostat, idler, tensioner etc..

You wont need any special tools, the bolts are all high quality so they come out easy out of the exhaust . You can easily remove the intake manifold and see bent valves..
