ETM Code P1657 Fix
98 v70 won't start
My problems started a few weeks back. Car would turn over but wouldn't start. Local wrecker suggested unplugging MAF to see it would start. It did. I drove it a couple of weeks that way with maf unplugged. Then starting problem returned. I then tried useing maf cleaner but didn't work. Replaced maf from wrecker and car started but ABS/Tracs lights came on, Took it to independent Mechanic and he said he cleaned contacts on ABS relay and said no codes were retrieved. Drove about 40 miles then ABS/Tracs came back on for a couple of miles, then Check Eng. light came on Abs/Trac went off. When I turned off the car won't start. I also notice the W light is on, I always keep it in E. Any suggestions. Car has 130k

I wonder what relay he was talking about there is no ABS relay.
The things that relate the up arrow and the CEL are the vehicle speed sensor but that should not have any impact on the car's ability to start. Vehicle speed is all derived from the ABS module and yours may be on its way out. They all die due to solder fractures but you can either fix it yourself if you know how to solder or send it out.
A flaky throttle position sensor could also be part of your problem. Have the codes read now that the CEL is on and post the numbers back.

Lee,
Thanks for the response. Where is the throttle position sensor? Can you please provide either a picture or description. I love Volvo's and this car, but if it was a horse I'd be tempted to shoot it.(kidding)

It's attached to the throttle body, at the front of the car. Remove the black cover over the idle control valve to gain access to it. It's held in by 2 screws, but I can't remember what kind.

(You can click on this picture to get a better view - sorry, it's the best one I have where you can see it).

My home pc died. just today got to library to read your replys. Do I need to replace throttle sensor? Just disconnect then try starting? Thanks for feedback. PS: Can't get codes until it starts so I can have someone else retrieve(no reader of my own)

You shouldn't have to start the car to read codes. Turning the key to the "on" position always works for me, but I haven't used an actual Volvo scan tool, so they may be different.
The stars have aligned. Finally got pc back. Can you/anyone tell me if the car will or can start with throttle body sensor removed? Since my pc has been down. Didn't want to do something I'd regret without making my question clearer. Been without my volvo for over a month now. Any advice or guidance will be appreciated. Thanks
