V40 2000 How do you open the hood?

Post by blaireanne »

I can't seem to get my hood open, but I can't find my owner's manual so I have no "formal" training on how to do this. How do you open the hood? I know there is a cable inside, below the steering wheel, but I pull it and nothing happens. Also the latch under the hood doesn't help me at all. Is there something wrong?

If it's anything like mine, you'll need someone to pull on the latch while you pull up (or push down) on the hood.

If you're not getting a click or anything from the hood latches, then it gets much more fun and you've gotta figure out a way to release the latches from underneath the car.

I've never seen a car that had problems opening a hood until I owned a Volvo...

I have the same problem and have tried several things to make it work -- with no luck.

Here is what i do now -- i have a small piece of aluminium about 2 inches long and 3/16" thick that I have wrapped a handkerchief around. I carry this in the car and when I need to open the boot (hood) I open the door -- stand up -- put the little tool in the hood/fender gap about a foot from the windscreen. Then with one hand I pull the release and with the other I pry the hood (gently). This lifts it just a very small amount -- which is enough. Then I go to the front of the car and open the secondary latch.
You could do this with a screwdriver -- paint stirrer etc -- just be careful not to scratch the paint -- and don't push hard -- ti doesn't take much
