S60R 6 Speed Clutch Problem?
S60R 6 Speed Clutch Problem?
On my way home this evening I merged onto the freeway. While switching from 5th to 6th (about 60 to 65 mph), i accidently tried to engauge 4th - i felt a snap at the bottom of the clutch travel, and it depressed a little farther after that. I wasnt able to enguage any gears after this. The clutch pedal stayed all the way depressed at that point. So after calling a tow truck and getting it home (at 1 am) i messed with it a bit before coming in here to write this. With the car off i am able to engauge gears. When i start it up and depress the clutch pedal (i gently pulled it back out with my hand first) i am able to begin to engauge gears but it seems the clutch is engauged and i didnt want to grind the gears. Is this an issue with the clutch cable (if it has one perhaps its hydrualic), or the master cylinder? Im not afraid to get my hands dirty and replace parts. Im hoping if i can diagnose the issue and fix it myself so i dont have to pay 3 or 4 hundred to tow it to my local volvo (only) shop. If not i guess its time for AAA!! Any guidance is appreciated!!

Your SLAVE CYLINDER took a crap, fairly common on R cars
You're looking at a big bill!! Most of the time the fluid from the slave cylinder goes on the clutch and ruins it
Approx a $2500 job!
Either way, even if the clutch is in good shape the labor will kill you as it's the same as a cluch install, 8-10 hours
(Slave is an internal slave).

Wow, a lot of negativism here...
It most likely IS the slave cylinder, which is part of the throw-out bearing and the transmission has to be removed to fix it...You might as well replace the entire clutch if you have to go that far, including the pilot...
However, the clutch master cylinder could be by-passing...Also, Volvo had a problem with venting on the master cylinder in some "R's" and a vacuum builds up in the master cylinder...Unscrew the master cylinder cap and see if clutch function returns...

What's a lot of negativism?
That IS what' is wrong and that IS what it costs, so why is the truth negative?
Your statement is incorrect, it IS the slave

so it was the slave indeed - the clutch ended up being destroyed when it went out as well. The clutch kit, the slave/bearing, and a new and improved vent pipe put out by volvo a few years back were all replaced (about 8 hours labor). Cost me about 1750 before tax - a little better than i was expecting! After driving it home from the shop the clutch movement was much improved - now that i feel the difference, its probobly been going out for the past year.

Good price, no EXCELLENT price
Pretty much said that would be your problem and what would happen to the clutch, it gets ruined by the fluid
