Hi everyone !
My car :
Volvo 850 2.0 GLT 1993 with 350K km
Here is my problem :
- Car works perfectly, no problem.
- I refuel, car won't start again. It can happen with cold (refueling just minutes after I start the car in the morning) or hot engine.
- I have to wait (up to 10 minutes) before it will eventually start.
- I've tried rolling the started for ever, it doesn't change anything.
- I opened the tire-like valve at the right-hand side of the injector ramp. It usually is pressurised with fuel. Instead it sometimes has air. When I do a purge, the car starts instantly.
So I started with googling and didn't find a clear answer. This is what I came up with :
- It could be the EVAP valve... but where is it ? I've looked behind the two metallic round plates in the trunk...
- I don't have a turbo and I don't have an EVAP valve near the fan at the front of the car.
- People having the same issue talk about the canister. Where is it ?
- It could also be the fuel cap. But it has been changed 1 year ago and seems OK.
Important :
I've changed some months ago (with second hand) :
- Fuel pump.
- Fuel pump relay.
- Injectors.
I've pulled the fault codes :
- Nothing regarding de EVAP valve.
- Some false codes that came with the engine note starting and didn't came back after reset. The car still has problems starting after the reset.
The problem only happens when refueling.
1 year ago, I had problems with the engine dying while running on motorway. I thought it was the fuel pump relay, changed it and it never happened again. May be it was the EVAP valve starting to dye. Don't no.
Questions :
- Could you please help me with some photos to find the EVAP valve (1993 model)?
- How can I pressurize the whole circuit so I can find a leak ? Can I use the tire-like valve ?
Thanks again for the time you'll take to answer me.
Cheers !
Hubert

They all have an EVAP system. This could be real simple. Do you round up to the next X.XX on fill-ups or even the next .XX?
If so, don't do that any more. Run the gas pump at the filing station until it quits and then quit trying to add any more fuel.
I had similar problems when I rounded to the nearest dollar and then flooded the charcoal canister with raw gasoline.
The car was not happy for the next 30 miles or so.

@Lee,
Thanks for this advise and reply. But at least the last two times I had problems after refueling, I didn't fill it at it's maximum. It was only half of the tank...
Do you know where is the EVAP valvle so I can at least check it or it's surroundings (leaking pipe or so).
Thanks.
