I was driving my car the other day and when i went to pass somebody my car had to downshift to pass it. But i noticed that it had a significant loss of power. Enough to really make me worry. Ever since then my car has been sluggish. It struggles up slight hills and has a hard time even accelerating to 60 when normally both of those things weren't a problem in the slightest. Any ideas on what it could be?
I think it might be something with my turbo. Mainly because i only slightly feel it kicking in for 1st gear. And for the other 3 instead of feeling more power after about 2500 RPMs i feel more of a resistance.
It's a 94 850 Turbo. About 230k miles on it. And it's an automatic.
Any thoughts on what it might be would be much appreciated. You guys are geniuses! I know you can help me!

Have a look at your intercooler hoses.
If you cannot find any obvious tears or blown off hoses (pull off the black plastic throttle cover and look at the throttle body one as well), have someone brake-clutch the car IN GEAR so the turbo will boost up while you look for any collapsing hoses. Don't do this for more than 5-10 seconds at a time, or you might damage the transmission.

OK thanks I'll definitely go check that out. Also i noticed that the turbo now makes a screeching noice. Almost like a tea kettle going off. It doesn't sound anything like it normally does.

Well i gave it a good look and from what i could see there were no tears in any hoses and everything looked connected. Any other ideas on what it might be?

What does your boost needle do now? You may want to find and hook up an aftermarket boost gauge to get an idea of what's going on, but it does sound like you are having turbo problems. Maybe a cracked intercooler?
I would also look at the vacuum lines to the turbo control valve, and perhaps check out the compressor bypass valve. The easy way to know if that one's a problem? Stomp the gas and get up to 4-5000 RPM, and then let off suddenly and listen for a fluttering noise.

lol well there's a slight problem there. My boost needle hasn't worked since i bought the car.
So i guess that after market gauge is the way to go. And I'll also give the intercooler a look over as well.
But as for the turbo itself i might get a little confused. I'm not exactly the best with cars (or even decent for that matter). But i'll still try and give it a look. And I'll do the check for fluttering as well. that one's easy

I'm doing my own TCV research and I came across this... you should check to see if the rubber elbow came off the back of the instrument cluster. You may have a vacuum leak there if it did and reconnecting it would fix the gauge and the leak.

I found the problem for this one by the way. When i finally found the time to get my car up off the ground i did notice a hose that had been disconnected, and i reconnected it. Not sure which one though. But after that it ran like a charm once more.
I actually had fixed it about a month ago but never got back to you about it. Sorry for leaving you hanging about the verdict.
Thanks for all the help guys!
