I have exactly the same problem. Oil in the water header tank. 97 1.9 td. Took it to volvo and they charged me 60 quid to tell me it 'might' be the head gasket, oild working it's way up the head bolts or the oil cooler.

They suggested changing the oil cooler first as it was the most obvious and easy to do.

1998 V40TD.
On idle, it seems to hunt after a while, revs rise and the engine shudders. Then the blue smoke comes.
The Lambda warning signal comes on (surely a misnomer on a diesel...).
The car hesitates ever so slightly, but power does not seem to be down. No oil consumption, new glow plugs 10k ago, serviced 200miles ago- oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter. And yet it still does it! Only 500 miles ago, the MOT tester said he was amazed at my clean emissions.
There is no oil/ coolant mixing as far as I can see.
Please help me.

there seems to be a slight misfire, so I reckon the problem is a faulty injector. I will post up the results of my testing.

To test your injectors-
wear goggles and thick gloves, as high pressure diesel gets squirted out at you.
1 remove the engine cover.
2 start the car
3 set the car to fast idle ~1100 rpm
4 slacken the fuel line union nut on the top of the injector- hold a cloth over the union to catch the squirted fuel
5 do this to each injector in turn
6 the injector that reduces the knocking noise or blue smoke when it's supply is interrupted is the knackered one!

TA DA!!!

I thank you.

You may also wish to block of your EGR.

Injector No4 is bust.
I rang the main dealer as the injectors are hard to get a hold of (which is upsetting as the REnault Laguna Manual sees them described virtually as service items (replace after 60K).

the ecu, all four injectors, air sensor, and heater/ air con control panel.

It runs wonderfully, the tick has gone and I'm happy.

I've changed my job, so I'll be selling it.
