S40 1.9D Engine Vibration

Post by Paul- »

My 1.9D year 2000 S40 engine is vibrating past 3500 rpm. I have taken into Volvo and they cannot find the cause. WOnder whether anyone else had similar prob? Possibly an engine mounting or out of balance within engine?

I have a 2000 V40 and have a similar problem.
I did a little research and apparently it is a very common problem with all the S40 and V40 engines (1.9 L turbos).
The engine mounts tend to fail or loosen allowing the engine to vibrate through the car.
Unless the vibration is really bad, I would leave it alone. Mine isn't that bad yet.
There are about 4 engine mounts (two under the car, one in the front, one on the timing belt side, and I think one near the trans.)
Anyway, for Volvo to do this, would be expensive. I suggest finding a gear head who can help you out.
Good luck.

If it's an upper engine mount it should be pretty easy. Here's how to do it on 850s:

The concept is similar for any car.

Lower ones are harder because you have to lift the engine a touch/cramped space.

I just purchased Volvo S40-2000-70K Miles (in US) Turbo from Auction. I checked, this car had never accident or body damage.

I own Toyota Camery 2000 which has very very smooth engine, even sometime you do not know that engine is running and you try to start the engine even it's running. As I was used to live with this since 5 years, now when I purchased this Volvo it's interior vibration is giving me headache. I can not live with this. I figure out is vibration is coming from Engine, It's not fault of interior.

I will follow on suggestion from previous post to resolve this problem.

Other problems are Headlight bulbs needs replacement quick same as break pads.

I decided, will not buy Volvo again in life.
