2000 S80 Told I have Sludge in the oil Pan, costly repair!
My S80 just turned over to 90,000 miles. I drove 70 miles and pulled into a parking lot, turned off motor and within 5 minutes could not re-start the engine. The car would go above 500 rpm's and then die. I had it towed to the dealer and was told that sludge was found in the oil pan. I have Volvo extended warranty but was told that it is considered maintenance and would not be covered. I was quoted over $1,000 for parts and labor and that my ETM would also need to be replaced. I have had all scheduled oil changes and service maintenance completed, and no where can it be found that the oil pan is to be checked during the scheduled maintenance. How can they say it is a maintenance item?????? Please help!

Ask them what sludge has to do with the ETM ??? If the ETM is defective, then that's where they need to start. Then after that, before trying to sell you thousand dollars of engine repair, they should at least flush the engine or even just change the oil to see if the engine is ok. You need to ask them clearly what is causing the car not to idle... IS THE ETM OR IS IT THE SLUDGE ?
My advise to you is tow the car out of that dealer asap. Have someone change the oil and then tow it to a different dealer for second opinion. You might just need an ETM which should be covered under your extended warranty. I don't think they have contacted your extended warranty yet. Get your vehicle out from that dealer before they ruin your extended warranty protection. Defective ETM is very common.
If you have any further question, just email or call me.

Dave
