'96 855t Replacing Shift Solenoids, Cover Currently Off

Post by BigRed »

I have a 1996 850 Turbo Wagon that had been been stuck in limp mode, already tried PNP and that did not resolve the issue. It was throwing a combination of P0500, P0734 and P0750, I decided to replace at least the S1 Solenoid, and probably better do all three while I'm in there.

It was a nightmare getting the cover off, I had to drill out 3 of the bolts, luckily they were fairly accessible with a right-angle drill.

So two questions, I measured the resistance between the solenoid connectors and the transmission body, S2 was ~13.6 Ohms and S1 as expected did not register at all. However the battery was not connected, is this a valid measurement?

I will obviously need to replace the bolts I drilled out, but would prefer to replace them all. Does anyone know where I can them?, if dealer, is their a part number?

Thanks!

That S1 is dead.

I believe the part number you're looking for is 969432, "six point socket screw".

Called two dealerships, first one was very close to my house but had no idea what bolt I was referring to. He faxed over I diagram and asked for me to pick it out, but the bolts and cover were not in diagram.

Next dealership came up with 986236, but wanted pre-paid for the order and they're about 20 miles away.

So I called back the first dealer again and they would order it for me with no pre-pay. I ordered 9 each of 986236 and 969432, both have same description but $0.43 difference in cost.

Thanks!

When I got the call from dealership saying parts were in, they said that part 986236 supersedes 969432, but that they are the same part. They were $1.43 each.

When I removed the existing solenoids in S1 and S2 position I realized they were not identical like the replacements from FCP Groton. I was suspicious when the S1 had a black connector, and the S2 had a green like the new ones. I removed the S2 first because it was more accessible, the bolt was not very hard to get it as expected. When I went to get the S1 loose, it was at least twice as tight, if not more. At that point I was very suspicious that I was not the first person to be in there.

The S1 has a darker colour to the metal housing, the black connector facing opposite direction of S2 and replacements and is stamped "NACHI RA13" on the bracket.

Anyone know if that was a legitimate part.

Also with the replacements S1 from FCP Groton facing the other direction, am I okay to just stretch the wire a bit? I can make it reach, but there seems to be some stress on the wire.

Thanks!

I suspect I have to replace the S2 on my '96 850 - it's showing P0755 and dropping into limp mode. I still need to measure the resistance - the problem is intermitent because I can clear the code with a scanner and it goes back to normal operation for a few days. So I am curious as to what the outcome of your solenoid replacement project was. Any problem with the parts ordered? Thanks for any advice.

Update: tested the S2 resistance (trans pin 22 to ground) and it was 20.5 ohms, compaired to S1 which was at 13.5. The troubleshooting guide calls for 10-15 ohms and says replace the solenoid if outside of that, so I suspect that is the next step. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Well, I finally got the 850 fixed, after driving for months with the intermittent solenoid problem. I ordered the S2 from FCP Groton, but with the summer heat, I dreaded spending 8 hours under the car. Finally, I decided just to go to my local repair import repair shop and have them put it in. It took them two days and cost me about $1000, but everything works great now with the trans. According to their shop book, you have to suspend the engine and drop the subframe - I guess the pros don't encourage lifing the engine up off its mounts. Anyhow, that is what they did, which probably took a bit more work than the driveway method, but I'm sure it made accessing the trans cover quite easy.

So that's the story - no I need to get back to fixing the A/C.

Just replaced Shift selenoids 1 and 2 in my '98 v70xc. I got the parts from a dealer and had them installed at a locall tranny shop so far no problems. By the way the dealer confirmed that the selenoids are the same.

Are the solenoids accessible without dropping the tranny?Any How to videos out there? My mechanic is willing to give it a try...We replaced the PNP switch...and the flashing light came back,,,,went into limp mode big time..had to use too high RPM's to get it to move,,Then NO MOVING..had to get towed,,Figured I had toasted the tranny and the next day,,,,started and moved fine.ands the blinking light is back and the limp mode with it...I am thinking that replacing the solenoids might be worth a shot before I consider a transmission transplant/.
I have a 1995 850. Thanks
