96 854 heatercore related issue.

Hey guys,
If anyone remembers back in like may, my heatercore went, well I thought it was that...

I took it out tonight, and am planning on going this weekend to get a new one and install,
when I filled it full of water just for the heck of it... it did not leak, and still hasnt.

My question is... is it possibly the inlet outlet pipes in the photos, they move quite a bit, im not sure if they are supposed to be ANCHORED into place or what.

any help on testing would rock too!

230k on a heater core... I was hoping it was just that. lol.

Also, yes there was ALOT of water in the cab, enough for like 2 resivours, since thats what it took before I realized what it was...

so its somewhere between the firewall and the HC...

They are mounted to the firewall with a thin metal plate but unless they are securely anchored into the mounted heater core at the other end they will have some play in them, both laterally and vertically, which is actually good news when you install the new heater core.

The O-rings at the junctions are a common problem - my heater core too is fine, but the darn O-rings are leaking.

Awesome, so I should start with the o rings, are there any write ups on this so I can glide thru it real quick like?

ill probably grab some from fcp or somewhere tomorrow while on lunch break.

Check the ends of the steel heater pipes for pitting caused by corrosion as, over time corrosion can/will remove some of the smooth external surface metal of the steel heater pipes and, instead of this surface being quite smooth and sound for the 'O' rings to seal properly, the pitting can/will allow small quantities of coolant fluid to escape into the cabin which then gradually fills up the foot-well under the carpet until the effects finally becomes quite 'squishily' noticeable.
