Newbe - Just diagnosed with ETM failure

Post by lbh1598 »

After experiencing ETS light and limp mode issues, I am told by Volvo Dealer that my 2000 S70 needs ETM replacement @ installed cost of $1,050 (~$650 for part, plus labor ($285) and programing costs, etc.).

While I see many people going route of nondealer part purchase and hiring out the install, many still have issues and many seem to spend about this much or more after it is all said and done. Trying to figure out which way to go, and what the issues are that people seem to experience with dealer repairs. Self install probably not option for me due to limited time, so won't save much on labor. Diagnostic charge would be $100 if I pull from dealer.
Also curious of anyone's experience with getting Volvo to help out with part cost - I purchased car new 11 years ago so out of warranty.

Love the car, but while it is in excellent conditon and has been well maintained, this repair looks to be about 15-20% of the cars value. Ouch!

Would appreciate your input.

Negotiate
The dealer cost for an ETM is about $400. I bought one today for $440 (10% over)
Software should cost you no more than $40 (more negotiation) and you should not pay more than an hour labor
