PCV oil trap

Post by upsidedown »

I am cleaning out my PCV system right now as it is plugged up. I have read where people replace the oil trap. My question is does it really need to be replaced. It appears to be just a plastic box where collected oil is allowed to drain back into the crank case. Is there any reason for it to be replaced. I cleaned out the obstructed lines and ports into the crank case. I should be able to just throw it back together right? Anyone been through this already? Also I will be looking for the torque specs for the intake bolt if anyone has them. Thanks

No, generally they are not clogged. I broke bits off of mine taking it out because it was so brittle, but it didn't appear to be very clogged up.

Dropped off my car on Saturday to have transmission flush and of course dealer quoted me for some other stuff.
transmission flush $270
Oil trap replacement $640
Engine Flush $180

They are saying hose running from engine to oil trap was broke due to the pressure build.
Can anyone tell me if this is needed or worth $640 + $180 ?

have 2005 XC90 T-5 with 90k.

thanks.

Well I cleaned out my PCV system. Had to take off the intake manifold to do the job. It is not hard at all to take it off. just get a new gasket and the torque specs. After all was cleaned out I had the volvo dealer test it and they said it is working fine.
