Transmission replacement?

Post by koffinb »

Hello, im a bit new to this site, however I am a huge volvo fan!
I have a 2001 volvo v70 t5 with 112k
the transmission has been slipping excessively for the past 10k miles
and i'm just about ready to replace it at my local volvo dealer, however I just want some opinions..
do you guys think it's really worth it? how long will the car last? possibly another 100k?
im contemplating getting a new tranny or selling the vehicle..please some advice would be nice. i love the t5 btw.

I rarely pay a dealer to do trans work as it gets sub contracted to a local shop unless its just a replacement.

If you like the car then fix it. many report problems with the 2001 transmissions. I would rather a qualified local shop diagnose and rebuild/repair it and resolve as many as the issues with current upgrades as possible. I'm assuming you have an automatic.

With good maintenance habits they can be very faithful cars.

thanks for the quick reply, the only reason why i'm getting it replaced at the dealer is because i'm a volvo salesman, and i;d be getting it done at somewhat of a discount.
I know you're probably thinking if i'm a salesman then i should know how faithful these cars are, however i've always owned older model volvos..240, 740, 940, 850, s70,..etc and I just wanted a few other opinions from other people.
I love the car i don't want to get rid of it..unfortunately it's an automatic, but i'll deal with it. i plan on putting a spoiler on it for a much sportier look. any ideas as far as customization and making it look unique would be greatly appreciated also.

the '01-'02 trannies have a high failure rate due to weak valve bodies, poor maintenance and stop neutral software feature(01s).

The replacements at the dealer are rebuilt trannies not new and probably will fail within next 50K miles.

If you are a volvo salesman, trade the '01 for a '03 or newer and you'll be fine.

Yes, i understand that they're rebuilt and not new. Trading mine in for an 03 is not as easy as it sounds..there aren't many t5 wagons out there. so you're telling me 50,000 miles is just about all I can get after i replace the current one with a rebuilt one???
The techs over at the dealer i work at are telling me I could go for a lot more than 50k
