01 S60 dies while driving

Post by ronjohnson »

while driving about 50 mph on freeway lost power and pulled to side of road. Would not restart then a guy stopped and said he knew this issue and opened the trunk pulled out fuses or relay and reinstalled them and vehicle started. This lasted about a year then it happened again and i randomly pulled fuses and relays from trunk fuse box and sure enought it started. What is going on my wife does not want to drive the car afraid it will die. what do i need to do to fix this issue and what did taking fuses and or relays out.

Sounds like a simple problem: electrical contacts. Get some electrical contact spray and give your relays and their ports a good spray.

For instance, this: http://www.chaparral-racing.com/Product ... googlebase

Never tried it, or owned it. It was just a result of a quick Google search. You can get that type of product at any auto parts store.

do not see anything listed for engine or fuel in fuse box/relay in trunk so where do you suggest might be simple if it was lights but it is dying and will not restart

Does it not start or not turn over?

You are dealing with 3 electrical circuits
Fuel pump
Ignition
Starter possibly

Keep your meter with you and test which is not working. Your initial description of it stopping while driving points to the ignition circuit or the fuel pump. That being said the ECM may also shut down the engine on you if it thinks something happened to put the cam and crank out of synch. So a check of the flywheel and cam sensors is in order as well.

Test the sensors for resistance and check the coils and fuel pump for voltage. Let us know what you find out.
Also check the obvious good clean connections of the battery . Some are so corroded that the cable can lose connection and shut the car down.
