1986 740 Car dies while driving, starts back up sometimes

Post by TuriusUSA »

I have an 86 Volvo 740 GLE 2316cc B230F engine, non-turbo.
This problem has been going on for years, the car dies driving down the road, often I can restart by putting it into neutral and turning it over while driving [NOT RECOMENDED] other times I have to pull over and restart, it's intermittent and has happened at most 6-8 times in a trip [5 to 100 miles]
The other day I took my daughter to the beach, and on the way home it happened in excess of 15 times and I was concerned I would not get her back to her mother on time[ I did] but it died for good on the way to my home.
I retried it 20-30 times over the last week and had it towed home, it will not start for more than a few seconds...
I am thinking the extreme hills [pitch] going and coming from the beach may have done something...
I have replaced the fuel filter about a month ago thinking that was the problem but it came back within a few days of the change...
I have not done much to it other than fixing a few bare wires [the plastic crumbled away (age)]
I have NOT checked the fuel rail pressure or the spark as of yet, I have to get my starter switch from storage [no helper] nor have I checked any fuses...
All those are on my list after reading several web pages including this one...

Thanks For your time...
Ken

I'd replace Fuel Injector Relay: E

Intermittent electrical issue can be a pill; this should not be done, but I have hooked direct 12-Volts to fuel and ignition side, one at a time, to rule out relays/etc. On fuel side, if involved in an accident that breaks open fuel line, well, vehicle could burn-up.
