2004 XC 70 headlight question
2004 XC 70 headlight question
I am new to the forum, new to owning a Volvo. My XC 70 has HID lights ( the kind that moves the reflector in the housing when switching from dim to bright) My question is; there are headlights closer to the grill, inside the housing that never come on. I thought they were just for looks but there are bulbs in them and they appear to be intact. There is no indication from the message center telling me they are burnt or malfunctioning. I thought they were brights but they never come on at all! Any info? Also, is there a dipstick (besides me) for the transmission fluid? I can't find one at all. I have removed and rebuilt transmissions in american cars so it ain't my first rodeo but this thing is different. It is an auto-stick type tranny with a 2.5 turbo engine. thanks all.
The transmission dipstick is somewhat down underneath the airbox, you shouldn't have to remove the airbox though. The dipstick will be yellow (yellow cap) and is somewhat difficult to get to. Get a flashlight and stick your head down in there and you will see it. Really can't help you on the headlights, possibly day time running lights that have been disabled?

Those are the daytime running lights.
They may have been programmed on your car to be off permanently.

huh, I just checked and those lights do come on if the car is running and you pull the dimmer switch as long as it is daylight out. but when you first start the car the regular headlights are on. If it is dark (like the last time I checked) they don't come on at all. That's wierd but at least I know.

Have you checked the lights during the day with the light switch turned off?

Yes, the headlight switch has two settings to choose from for driving.
12 o'clock
HID -> day and night
9 o'clock
DRLs -> day (lights you're asking about)
HID -> night
These are toggled via sensor that detects night/dusk.

did you find the stick? it is on the right hand side of the engine under a radiator hose and a couple of other lines on the front of the tranny. To make it more fun it is held in place by a piece of spring steel that must be manipulated while pulling up on the stick.
Holy smokes! I found the tranny dip stick. I should have gone to school to be a volvo technician because this thing will surely test all I thought I knew. My wife loves driving it so I'm sure I will be in it for the long haul.
