1997 960 197000 miles won't start

Post by pete+ »

I will try to be very informative.I own a 1997 black 960 and I love it. I bought it inexpensively because a local dealership informed the female owner the car need high dollar repairs which it did not. I have driven the car for 2 1/2 years almost without incident, a fabulous car. Recently the service light began coming on and would go out within a couple minutes. his was about 2 weeks ago. Because the dealership was less than honest with the previous owner I used this as my excuse to ignore the momentarily unpleasant service light in the morning. On the way home last week from a slight distance I was very low on gas and chanced making it to the corner gas station by our house, didn't . So I walked to get our gas can at the house..(I was close indeed but still fell short of the station).Got the gas and drove it to fill it up. The parking lock ot/in on the center shifter device locked me OUT of park at the gas station. I drove home, put bricks behind the back tires, set the brake, and read all I could on the internet concerning this. Took the park lock solenoid and the micro switch out of the side of the shifter to get the car to go into park actually physically removed the entire two parts (solenoid and switch) and wiring. I did not reconnect the two wires to anything or themselves and interestingly this fact was strangely missing from any info I had read on the forums. At this point the car would run and start. I tested the car to make sure of this before reassembling the console, etc. I did not have the 3 mode drive switch (W,E,S) hooked up. The car ran poorly and quit while I revved it to try to keep it running. Since there were so many immediate variables involved I quit while I was behind. But another interesting confusion that might as well be mentioned at this time is that I disconnected the battery in a vain attempt of hoping something might re set itself, for example.. the alarm system which I thought might be faulting, It has never gone off(we don't have a remote it has always been key activated) but had gone off two days earlier on my wife , who has not borrowed the car in 2 years.since it was just 2 days before all this I suspected that might be involved somehow. I showed her how to unset the alarm mode by turning the door key all the way to the right but I was assuming it was human error. The alarm went off when I reconnected the battery.
I reset(shut it off) from the door lock as i had shown my wife. The car turns over well. That is all it will do though. I haven't attempted to screw anything up worse. A friend told me of this site so here I am. Please, whatever info anyone can help us with will be readily welcomed. to the best of my knowledge this is all I know I did. The manual lock out over-ride could not be pushed in successfully to help in this situation either.

one additional fact I neglected, the car just shut off while it was running.. I disconnected the battery and I reset the alarm that had gone off after the car quit.

I re-read this and it is a little confusing.Here's a time line
1) service light appears, on for 120 seconds in morning or at start up. goes away after 120 seconds every time. 2-3 weeks
2) wife has alarm go off while getting in car at work. I show her how to reset the OFF by key to the right in door to disable.
3)I run out of gas, get some gas to reach gas station, car locks me OUT of park( unable to put car in park at gas station)
4)drove home and read forums. disabled electronic lockout ,physically removed solenoid and micro switch in shifter.Shifts now.
5) car starts. Column not fully assemble, 3way travel mode switch not hooked up.( Interestingly the W (wet) mode button will not depress now, maybe that's normal but I never noticed that before).Car shuts off on it's own while running, never restarts
6)I can crank it but it won't start. Fuel pump? smelled very rich when it shut off. Relay?
7) Dealership just called and I can take it in.

1- service light is a reminder of oil change, has to be reset, is function correctly. Not sure on your model, but some 960's can be reset by carefully pulling out the rubber plug on the instrument cluster and depressing the button with a paper clip, careful with the plug, it can be easily pushed thru and fall to the inside of the cluster.
3- Could it be that you did not have your foot on the brake pedal? Causing the problem, you need to have the brake pedal depressed to shift out of park, so maybe it needs to depressed to shift into part? Just guessing there, but it makes sense.
5- Winter mode button is functioning correctly, it is made so that the button is always up, that is so, then it will be in normal mode the next time the car is started, using winter mode is for short bursts, not to be drive continuously, it will over heat the trans as it will be starting out in 3rd gear from a stop.
6- Is there a way to test the fuel pressure? You might also check the fuel pump fuses, I ran out of gas once and blew the main pump fuse, the fuel is used to cool the pump, so it overheated and blew the fuse.

Thanks Dan, that sets me in a direction. I smell gas though but when I turned the key I get no fuel pump sound at the tank vent/filler. I had my foot on the brake and I just re attached that wires that went to the solenoid switch. All my fuses looked ok. Thanks for the winter mode info and the reset for the service light which I suspected was for oil. My wife's Honda has the same type of "light" for her oil changed to reset. I have to work tonight so I'll check all this tomorrow Sir. I appreciate you taking the time and I'll let you know play by play what it is. Pete+
