i am having a problem puting my car in gear when the motor is running.the clutch was done 3 months ago.i can put it in gear when its off, start it up(car will not creep) and drive away.it is eather the shifter or some thing in side.
it has has been colder here 35-49 f.when i greased the shifter ball it works better so i would like to know how to remove the white cap on top and what to check.

Nothing to do with your shifter
These cars are getting old now, change your GEARBOX FLUID, you may make it easier if you go with synthetic
(Red LIne works well)
Then learn how to put a car into gear with a cold transmission
Put the gearshift into another gear before trying to get it into 1st gear.,4th is always good
4th then 1st
You will find it will probably go right in

Oh and if you try to remove the white cap,(probably more yellowish by now) most likely it will break (ask me how I know this)! so make sure you have a new one.
I don't know how easily available these are these days so be careful what you're fooling with.

There are three possible reasons that this is happening, all related to the fact that the transmission input shaft is not stopping when you depress the clutch...

(1) The clutch is out of adjustment or needs to be bled and is not fully disengaging...This is a hydraulic clutch, is it not?...

(2) They did not change the pilot bearing when they installed the new clutch and it is starting to seize up...

(3) The first gear synchro is worn and is not stopping the input shaft when the clutch is depressed...

It will have to be fixed, but in the meantime as a temporary measure, depress the clutch, put the car in first gear, then start the engine...After it warms up, it might be shiftable without shutting down...

No do what I said, just out it into another gear first, before you go into first
The shifter is not your answer.
What he said would be.
Bad throwout bearing, worn 1st synchro or bleed the clutch PROPERLY.
My guess is that if you did install a new trowout bearing as you shoud have...bleed the clutch again
