Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

99 S80 T6 Nightmare

Post by AuroraTear »

I think this is Where I belong. Car is a 1999 Volvo S80 T6. I need help. Bad. I hope someone here can. Ive searched the forums i don't know exactly what it is. It seems like i have symtoms of the problems everyone describes but I dont have any engine codes at all. EVER.
1. I have a an audible surging sound in my tail pipe. as though the engine speed is going up and down every few seconds at a very constant interval.
2. The car is very hard starting somtimes I have to crank it 2-3 times to get it to stay running, and then i have to gas it. There is a very loud fluttering sound from behind the engine. like its in the turbos however at idle turbo's arnt active and it stops once the engine is warm. and the engine shutters like its skipping. But once again I have no engine codes.
While Driving I can feel the car surging or more like there is a strong wind. Its at the exact same time interval the audible surging at the tailpipe can be heard at idle.

When i first got the car, about 500 miles later the Heater Core blew, flooding my passenger floor with anti-freeze. I repalced it and almost immediatley a small crack developed in the radiator. A month later the small crack turned into a large crack the car over heated. I bought and repalced the radiator. After starting it up i had large amounts of white steam exiting my tail pipe. I had blown the head gasket.

2800.00 dollars later and an empty bank account I still have all the problems i had before Just no white steam, or hot engine.
The car now has 99031 miles.
I took the throttle body off and cleaned it myself, using Qtips and carb cleaner. it was fairly dirty. Oil dripped out of te bolts as i took it off. Perfectly clean I put it back on and took it for a ride. Now it seems as though i have a bad spark plug. IT was not surging however when i go home 15 miles later it was extremly rough at idle. I had a check engine light and a rubbing sound comming from the timing belt. Scared the timing was messed up because the garage had done the timing belt as well. I called They sent a tow truck free of charge and MOnday It was an ABS code and the timing belt was rubbing on teh housing and that was fixed. Again no codes or anything to tell me what is going on. WHen i started it up in front of the garage. it was rough the mechanics looked at it with me listened they said it seemed like it was misfiring. I have 6 spark plugs which i have changed before. I took teh cover off and there is a fair amount of oil around the spark plugs. Im gonna let the garage change them now. I have a second throttle body I can exchange my old one with. II need advice, HWere do i start. What do i do. Im lost. Im practically broke at this point.

The problem is I have no engine codes. I never have even with the headgasket blwo the only code I had was for the ABS module. What is going on and any advice

Im not sure about the surging, but the rough running and oil on the plugs sounds to me like the garage messed up sealing the top cover on the cylinder head, causing an oil leak and possibly a misfire when it got to the spark plugs.

Does the check engine light turn on when you turn the ignition on? Ie does it work....
