We bought an 06 XC70 a couple weeks ago, and the parking assist has not worked consistently. It only beeped once in a couple weeks, but should have on other occasions. The light is illuminated on the dash button. I just replaced the Stereo with an in-dash double-din GPS head unit, so we won't hear the beeping from the parking assist even if it were working, since it sounded like it came through the speakers. The CANBUS adapter I used for the steering wheel give an output for reverse, but that's it. It would be nice to get the parking assist back up and working, and I'm trying to figure out my options. Here are the options I am considering, and am hoping for some help on filling in some gaps on each. Other thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
1> Add Volvo parking assist speaker to my existing system, if one exists. If there are other problems, I will need to diagnose them still, but this would be a good start. Is this possible? does this exist? Is there an output on the controller I could wire a small speaker/buzzer in to?
2> Replace system with a Volvo system that has a separate speaker. Does such a thing exist?
3>Install aftermarket system with its own controller and speaker. This would probably make the dash switch useless, which I would like to keep functional. Does anyone know if the switch is a standard 12 volt switch I could put inline with the power of an aftermarket controller? Would I need a dealer to program the car to tell it that it does not have the Volvo Parking Assist, if I removed the existing controller? I might do this and leave the controller in place, too. Will it give a light an message that the parking assist is not working If I disconnect the sensors?
Thanks

I would suggest that you reinstall the original head unit and then start trouble shooting the parking sensor system, to eliminate the possibility that the after market head unit is complicating the situation. I can not speak for Volvos, but BMW's head unit outputted a digital signal that was then sent to an amp in the trunk which then sen it out to the speakers. The cell phone, parking sensors, and disk changer all sent signals to the amp. I suspect that if your parking sensor system worked before that it would work after unless the new head unit caused traffic issues on the digital lines or the install required some alterations to the sound system.
