What tool to remove trans lines to radiator?

Post by JimBee »

On the '93 850, there are two transmission cooling lines that connect along the left side of the radiator. I need to remove them and can't see a neat way to do it without possibly damaging them. Is there a tool?
Thanks!

I have also used a pair of needle nosed pliers. No matter what the tool is be gentle if you intend to reuse the clamps. In my case I just buy new clamps anytime I need to remove any of the oil cooler lines. They are dirt cheap.

I used the needle nose pliers as well today. I was shocked at how fast the oil came out!, I removed 2.5 litres in something like 20 seconds.

1. Yes, use snap-ring pliers.
Whatever you do, look carefully at the clip, the thin end goes toward the engine and the THICKER end goes to the radiator.

2. When re-install it, use a screw-type clamp and clamp over the clip to prevent clip from coming loose!

A worm clamp like he suggests is bombproof.

Or you can use zip-ties around those clamps, easier to put on and off and they have never failed me.

I cable tie or zip tie is fine. a High quality correctly sized worm drive metal clamp is good as long as it does not oval and deform too much.

I read on here that it crushed the connector and the oil line popped off while driving. The chap lost a ton of oil but managed to save the transmission.

I used a standard 6mm cable tie. You can hang 140Ibl from it.

The KEY thing when using clamp is to snug it around the clip. Give it a snug twist and that is it.
Simply enough to prevent the clip from opening up.
No need to use brute force when tightening the clamp.

So far so good for me. My clamp is nice and tight.

It was described to me to put the "tapered" end towards the radiator. We obviously need a photo!

Warning - zip ties failed to secure my upper retainer clip. The upper transmission hose loosened and sprayed out all of the transmission fluid.
