UPDATE... Well, I think I have figured it out, where the cooler pipe attaches to the radiator there is like a double attachment socket. It can either be screwed off, which I did the first time and saw the coolant squirt out, or squeeze and pull out the green locking clip which releases the ATF cooler pipe. Only trouble now is, I managed to separate the outer edge of the green locking clip leaving parts of it still in there, so now I have just wedged the two outer pieces back in place just to keep it together while I wait and get a couple more new clips before proceeding.

Thanks for the link Mike, appreciate the trouble you went to. However, at the risk of sounding stupid, I just can't find that trans cooling pipe near the radiator. Are we talking the same trans here, mine is a 55-50 SN geartronic on a 2001 V70-T5 and the only pipe I can find that looks anything like the one on the Gibbons post is for coolant to the radiator (thats what came out when I undid it) and there is nothing else in that general area that looks like it

Full flush done through cooler pipe three times now and the fluid is looking a lot better for it. I found a new cooler pipe clip so all back together as should be, taking her over to the mainland this weekend for a good long drive where I will do the drive cycle too.

What you need to do...when you're ready to do the cycle.
1:Bring a wrench.
2:Disconnect the battery for at least a 1/2 hour.
3:Go eat lunch.
4:When you reconnect after lunch, make sure to connect it by connecting the NEGATIVE terminal first
5: Do the drive cycle immediately after you start up again.
Do not drive 5 miles, do not drive 1 mile.
As soon as you connect the battery, start the cycle right there and then.

Well today I took her for a cruise about 400 K's up the coast and back and was blown away by her sudden change of attitude, just perfect !!, I kid you not. I first spent an hour driving around a hot city (Brisbane) doing errands before heading North up the free way. In the city I never got a flare or a bump and since I was passing, I called in to see my Indy Volvo mechanic to get him to check the fault codes. The transmission was clear of fault codes !!??, what had happened? Also, when I first arrived at his garage the regular fault message that seems to keep popping up in the dash showing "emission control service needed" was there again which he cleared and the only fault code he found for the engine was 261A He was not sure of what it meant and I can find no reference to that particular number, anyone any ideas? Once I was on my way North I really got to feel what a pleasure these babys are like to drive. An hour or so later I finally arrived at the town I was going to and thought, well, this is it, I have had my fun on the long cruisy drive, now I bet she's going to go all stupid again at the lights and juctions etc .....but no, behaved as an auto should, smooth down and up shifting through the range every time right to my destination. It was the same story for the return trip, very pleasant and uneventfull. I just hope that I have not jinxed it now by posting this 
I am obviously not out of the woods yet and she is going to need a bit more nurturing. One little thing I did notice whilst driving at about 110 k's (70 mph) an hour on the open road, she didn"t respond as well as I thought she might have when overtaking, there was no real umph like there would have been in my old 850 T5, she seemed quite sluggish by comparison
I have not done the drive cycle yet and am wondering if I still need to.

Whatever it has learned, it has learned by now.
If you want to do this properly you had to do the cycle immediately as I said
You can disconnect the battery for 1/2 hours or so (that resets most of the adaptions) and try doing the drive again but doing it now will yield NOTHING and will be a waste of your time

So what you are saying Jim is that I have missed the boat regarding doing the drive cycle?
I assume the result that I had yesterday means that the only problem I had ( or still have) with this trans is to do with the electronics (memory) rather than the mechanics of the box, which is encouraging. I have a B4 cover coming from Volvo next week but from the way things look do I still change it or just let good alone

Today I took a drive south about 100Ks to the the Sunshine Volvo garage, which is a Volvo dealership in the SW corner of Queensland on the Gold Coast. I had previously the day before been on the phone to Gordon, the service manager there, and told him my story and how I just wanted to run it over their Vadis machine to get the codes read and cleared just to see how it looked and he had cheerfully said just bring it in and we will slip it in for a check between jobs. Sure enough, as soon as I got there, they whipped it into the workshop and about half an hour later they returned with the print out. The only engine fault they came up with was ECM-261A (same as the one my Indie garage had found) which the Vadis interpretation was "long-term fuel trim, bank 1 upper limit" and that was it. The chief mechanic, a knowledgeable guy called Marty, said he thought it would be the MAF sensor on it's way out, which is what quite a few people have said on various Volvo forums, so I shall be replacing it soon. (I did do the spray clean but no improvement) The strange thing was though, there was not one fault code came up relating to the transmission, so that was all good. So, after all the BS from the Southside Volvo garage in Brisbane (see my earlier posts further back) it was such a pleasure to come across a garage that actually were not up themselves and gave me the time of day so lets "big it up" for SUNSHINE VOLVO, NERANG, QUEENSLAND !!!, they know how to treat the customer. To top it off, at the end of my chat with them I asked how much I owed and they just said, no problem just a donation to the Cancer Foundation box will do, which I gladly did. WOW, all is not lost, there are still some nice Volvo people out there, they just take some finding

@T5Aus, glad to hear you've had a good experience in the end, especially here in Aus. I've got a 2000 T5 just like yours and have been having a similar bunch of problems. I took it to a dealer, and just as you had happen, they told me I needed a new transmission.
I'm not too sure what's going on with it, but symptoms are:
- flaring (as if it's driving in 5th when it should be in 3rd)
- sometimes can't find reverse (just spins as if in neutral)
The transmission fluid seems to be a good red colour, but there's a bit of a smell coming off it, pretty awful burnt rubber kind of smell. Also after running for about 20 minutes, the fluid was about an inch above the hot mark on the dipstick.
Is it likely that too much transmission fluid could be causing my problem?
