s60t 02 garage replaced Serpentine belt, now car has no Umph

Post by smarzig »

So the garage replaced my belt and AC compressor and pully (since the belt snapped and the pulled was making noise something aweful. Well the sounds gone, but besides a service type indicator, the car has no "umph" at all much to my dismay. I can drive around town just fine but forget about hills or accelerating at a ramp.

Does something have to be reset with the computer?

Please help!

Does the car have a check engine light on? Sounds like the car is in limp mode or something has been disconnected. I would take the car back to the shop ASAP and have them fix whatever they messed up.

There's no way they should have had the timing belt off to do the accessory belt, but if they did and replaced it one tooth off, that could make it sluggish. Or if they for some reason loosened the screws on a camshaft sprocket and didn't get the timing right when they tightened them (if they tightened them), that could affect performance. I can't imagine why they might do that, but it might be worth putting a timing light on it just to be sure. I've owned my 850 for two years and still discover some reckless wrenching
when I work on it.

ok I went back to the garage. Basically I can't accelerate much past around town. I put the gas to the floor and nothing happens which almost caused and accident off the ramp. Yes, a computer main light comes on that was never there.

They ran a code check or something and said it was the TPS that was throwing and error. They couldn't seem to find a price on one so i called FPC and they said it don't exist. I hope its something they forgot to snap in or i can swap out myself.
After the belt snapped i did drive it around town slightly and then to the mechanic the next morning.
I forgot to mention the cruise control does not kick in either now
MEssage on car :Engine System Service Required.

Here is what FPC emailed me

:Hi Scott,
> the parts department at the local volvo dealership asked if you needed a throttle body or a accelerator peddle? They stated that your car does not have a TPS or Throttle Positioning Sensor. Talk to you soon. Thank You

Technically it does have a TPS, but its part of the whole electronic throttle module rather thand a standalone sensor on a cable-actuated throttle. Try and get the actual code that the care threw.

I also forgot to mention that the car will eventually go at high speeds in the highway and doesn't rough idle or anything but it just GETTING to that speed, i cant really accelerate except very very slow. I floor it and nothing happens at all, just steady as she goes until it gets to 60-70mph.

Could they have forgotten to connect something or lodged something loose while replacing the ac compressor/pulleys and belt?

I had a similar problem with my S80 when I first got it (at 170 something K miles). In my case I ended up cleaning the TCV soleneoid and replacing the vacuum pipe that goes to the wastegate on the second turbo. When it got cold in winter it was so bad that it would barely get to 30MPH, I had to REALLY coax it to get to that, but then got better as it warmed up I would eventually be able to get it up to 55 or so. The only code it threw at the time was one for the pre-cat O2 sensor on bank 2 which I still haven't replaced.

ok, i took it to a guy that JUST fixes up volvo's and sells them. He said it wasn't the housing but he couldn't tell if it was one of two parts, but that a dealer could. I think one of the parts he said was the Pedal Sensor, but I can't recall what the other one was? Does anyone know? The car has no "Throttle" he said.

It sounds like the AC compressor siezed up and that is why the belt snapped...Serpentine belts will not slip like the old time Vee belts would, so something has to give...How did you get around town without power steering?...That had to be a real challenge...It sure sounds like it is in limp mode...

it was tough w.out power steering but i wanted to get a belt and change it myself but opted for a mech.
Right now the car rides PERFECTLY except i have no "on-demand" exceleration getting on a ramp or up a hill. The car will slowly get to 60-70 incrementally. Around town it's fine. Am I stuck going to the dealer?
