1999 volvo v70 awd replaced shredded serpentine belt now won't start

Post by samanthasmith1967 »

the serpentine belt shredded and wrapped around the alternator in my 1999 volvo v70 AWD ..had to cut it loose...two other pieces where stuck in two different spots-pulled them out
replaced the belt now it will crank but not start up...acts like it's flooding itself(strong gas smell). what is the solution to make it start running? would appreciate any advice....thank you in advance

Does it sound like its cranking faster than normal? Its possible this is just an example of lawn mower syndrome. Remove each spark plug and add a spoonful of oil to each cylinder and try again.

Lawn mower syndrome leads to excess fuel washing away oil around the cylinder reducing compression; adding a spoonful of oil helps restore it.

Pop the timing belt cover off and make real sure that the serpentine belt shrapnel didn't sneak its way back in around the sprocket on the harmonic balancer. It has happened before and with disastrous results a few times. If everything looks good there then start checking sensor wires that are in the area around the front of the motor like the ECT sensor and the wire harness that runs to the ECU.

Try and rotate crankshaft manually clockwise 360 degrees by hand Like you would after replacing a timng belt. Or do a compression test. As Lee commented... others including me have had that belt break wrap in the crank shaft area and it caused the car to skip time and bend valve stems.
