V70 2004 D5 Coolant capacity

Post by Dunc »

I want to replace the coolant in my 2004 V70 D5 engine because I suspect contains different antifreeze types. All the advice suggests not to mix antifreeze types and that it's best to use Volvo genuine coolant to avoid corrosion (and it's not much more expensive). My Haynes manual says the coolant capacity is 12.5 litres. I opened both the radiator and rear engine drain valves, but only 5 litres has come out. Does anyone know how to drain the coolant completely or is there really only 5 litres in there?

You would think the owner's manual would have this information in it but it doesn't...it has all the rest- oil, transmission, etc. We also have an '04 V70 but not the D5 (but I would think they are the same) and I was also amazed at how little it held (also about 5 liters came out initially). My recommendation is to flush distilled water through it several times to get all the old out and to put the heat on full blast and engine running so that your heater core opens up too- it also holds some coolant and you want to drain it as well..and then try to add a mixture of 50/50 coolant the best you can estimate to capacity. My S70 holds 7.2 liters. It is also a 5 cylinder so I would say the capacity is very similar if not the same as our later model V70's...I know the oil capacity on both and engine size is about the same. I used this as a guide to estimate total capacity when making up the 50/50 mixture for my V70. I'm not sure how close I got but I'm sure it's pretty close. It never hurts to have a little over that 50% with the Volvo fluid, so that's what I did. For sure, the 12.5 liters that Haynes says has to be wrong. Good luck and if you ever find out the actual capacity, please post it here!

I got curious so started looking things up w/ Google- found this on the Amsoil site (capacity look-up): http://www.amsoil.com/mygarage/vehiclel ... etric=True It say initial fill was 6.6 liters (for a non-turbo as well as 2.5 liter turbo), so I wasn't very far off (if what they say is true). I looked at the other V70's- the 2.3L turbo was initially filled with 7 liters. I would Just over-estimate on the Volvo fluid side and you'll still be just fine even if the mixture isn't totally 50/50.
