Is the coolant oily?
In any case, change the oil immediately, and anytime it looks milky again. Get the car fixed very soon.
Powdered dishwash machine detergent works well to remove oil from the cooling system. After cleaning, flush, flush, flush, and flush some more.

oil looks like milkshake
the coolant is very oily. in fact it looks like milkshake also. my friend is picking up some manuals from the volvo dealsership. i have the gaskets so i will be taking the heads apart and having them rebuilt. ive never seen the insides of volvo motors so im assuming they are ohc. are they comparable to doing the haeds on chevys?

The heads are OHC and of course there are two of them with 20 valves. Other then the shape there should be little difference in these heads from any other. Did you determine whether or not your engine oil passes through the radiator? It sounds like that was not the culprit if you are proceeding to head gasket. Please let us know how it turns out.

im assuming it was the head gasket. i was just thinking about somthing. depending on how the motor was running, can the ecu have the engine start running richer? i was thinking it was the dead gasket again because of teh black smoke but it it was getting coolant in the motor, it would be blue smoke right?
again, maybe i dont have to take apart the heads. i will wait for a replay on a possible answer before i take it apart.

Black smoke is usually a rich fuel condition (or a diesel engine!). If it is burning oil then it would be blue. And yes the ECU does adjust your mixture based on the readings it gets from the sensors on the motor and exhaust.
If you were getting a lot of water in your engine by a head gasket leak you would see white steam coming from the exhaust and would probably smell antifreeze. Not having steam still does not rule out the head gasket being bad. From your description I would say everything is pointing towards the head gasket.

Did you get this figured out?? I'm having a similiar problem with my 97' 850 GLT.[/quote]
I had a similar problem in my 98 xcountry, it turned out to be the rad. the oil does indeed go throught the rad.
I had already paid for head removal before I figured this one out

ok,
i decxided to get another motor on line and used. it has 58,000 miles on it and has a warrantee. i figured this is a better way to go especially since i figured that thehead dervice should be just about as much as i paid for the engine. i will keep you guys informed on how the motor runs.
