I have a 2008 S60 2.5t with automatic transmission and roughly 48k miles on it. Today, when I started the car, I was unable to shift the gear from park to drive. The car started just fine and I am able to depress the brake. The brake lights came on. I just cannot shift the car into drive. I really hope that someone can provide a quick easy solution to help me. I have driven 500 miles to visit my family for Thanksgiving and need to return tomorrow. The car drove perfectly fine on the trip here and I have had no problems with it. I just cannot figure out why the car will not shift out of park and into drive or reverse.
Thanks in advance for any help! I really would hate to miss work on Monday due to what I hope is a minor issue.

I don't have a fix but it sounds like it is the solenoid that disengages when you press the brake to allow you to shift that is the problem. I do not know if it is by the shifter in the car or by tranny itself.
The solenoid is right below the shifter (under the shift plate) you should hear or maybe even feel a small thump when the brake pedal is depressed. This sound is the solenoid working. If you have spilled anything in the console recently the solenoid could be stickied up. Check the button on the shift knob (that you press in to change gears) be sure it is fully engaging and isn't broken. You might also take your fist and give the gear selector a firm tap downward. I had one onetime ride up ever so slightly and would not allow the car to shift. I'm not sure how it happened but I heard it click when knocked back down. If all that fails try rocking the car back and forth a little and see if it will then go in gear.
