Does anyone know what starter I can interchange on my 1986 240 ? This car is dead up by my work place and I thought it was just the battery but a new battery later it still will not start . The starter sounds bad but before spending more can I pop the starter from my 1991 940 T into the 240 to see if it will start ?

My first question is "Is this car an automatic or a stick shift?"...If it is an automatic, the problem most likely is the neutral safety switch located in the center console on the left side of the shifter...There is a white plastic arm/link that gets misaligned...If it is a stick shift, you are probably on the right track...

Both of these cars have the 4 cylinder "red" engine and it is very likely that the starter is the same, but I cannot guarantee it because I have never compared them and have never had to replace a starter...BTW, do not strike the starter to "unjam" it...The starter has permanent magnets instead of wire-wound field coils and sharp blows can deguass the magnets, or shatter them...They are very brittle...

Yes, the starters will swap.
Make sure the cables, both cables, are clean and tight on both ends.
