2005 XC70 - P0027 OBDC code

Post by melkal »

Hello,
I have a 2005 xc70 that the engine check light appears it seems to come on more afterI fuel up and is more noticable in the winter. It goes away after a few days; SOmetimes I tightening the cap, but I cannot get a correlation since it takes awhile for it to go off.

It would sort of lead me to replacing the fuel cap. But, I take it to my local garage where he plugs in his Snap On obdc reader and it is not able to read the codes. SO, I have gone out and purchased the Innova 3030 and 3100 tryin to decide which to open. The more I read, the more I find that there are proprietary codes which may thwart my efforts anyway.

I guess replacing the fuel cap is a lot less expensive than a trip to the Volvo dealer and then to return the two unopened code readers.

SO, here is my question. Will the code readers read any better than the Snap On one my garage has (can't imagine), am I likely to get a Volvo only code that I can't retrieve anyway? And by owning one of these will it help? One is $40 and one is $90. The more expensive one has memory, freeze frames, etc.

Thanks in advance.

They're all the same
NONE will give you any Volvo priority codes just generic codes
Go to the dealer

SO, after hooking up a code reader I now know that the code I get is P0027 - Exhaust Valve Control solenoid Circuit Range/Performance Bank 1.
It happens when I fill up with gas, comes on for a while and then goes off in a few days. I was thinking it had something to do with the gas cap, but the code looks like something else entirely. It is intermittent.
Anyone have any ideas?

I've never had any first hand issues with this code. From some quick reading apparently there are 2 solenoids located on top of the cam cover. 1-Intake and 1-Exhaust. From what I read if the exhaust solenoid fails it will cause this code. If you believe it is gas cap related you might try replacing it first. If that doesn't do the trick I'd bite the bullet and have a dealer do a diagnosis. Apparently the exhaust solenoid is a part that is not hard to change, but I'd want to know that was it before replacing. The dealer may be high for pulling the codes, but its cheaper in the long run than throwing parts at a problem. You can search P0027 code here and find a couple of similar threads if you are interested.

here is an update. I let my kids use the car for a quick trip to NY. WHen it cam home it had 2 codes. P0027 and P0101(mass of volume air flow.....) I checked the air filter, it was quite dirty and was replaced, swapped the gas cap with one from another car (same model), and no codes for 2 weeks................
